Research Data Analyst: Innovative Harm Reduction Services

The International Charitable Foundation 'Alliance for Public Health' is a leading non-governmental professional organization which makes a significant impact on the epidemics of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis and other socially dangerous diseases in Ukraine in cooperation with state partners and civil society organizations through providing financial and technical support to relevant programs, which cover over 300,000 members of most vulnerable populations, which is the highest indicator in Europe. Alliance team includes over 100 professionals who are based in Kyiv.

Service Description: Research Data Analyst: Innovative Harm Reduction Services

The Alliance for Public Health develops and provides a range of services to reduce harm associated with the use of psychoactive substances. Currently we are developing a range of services for recreational users of psychoactive substances including those associated with Ukraine’s growing electronic dance music scene. Services include delivery of objective information and counselling, psychosocial support including trip sitting, drug checking services, distribution of condoms and lube, and testing for infections. In order to monitor the demand for services, track service delivery and develop services in line with the changing needs of our target audiences we are looking for a Research Data Analyst to process, analyse and utilise our programme and study data. This is a parttime position which may require 20 hours per week and can be combined with another parttime job. Fulltime engagement is subject to negotiation.        

The safety of our employees is our top priority, due to current COVID-19 safety measures, employees who can work from home, are required to do so. Once it is safe to resume standard practices of commuter travel and social interaction per government guidelines, employees with an office presence required by projects needs and management leadership will be expected to return.

General Summary/Purpose: The Research Data Analyst will engage in mixed-methods data collection and analysis activities for several studies on substance use, sexual and mental health. Currently we utilise online surveys and self-administered questionnaires at EDM festivals to explore patterns of substance use, prevalence of overdose and other adverse events associated with the use of substances, sexual behaviours including association between sexual practices and the use of substances, mental health challenges facing our clients and other aspects. We also use online surveys to engage new clients in our programmes designed to reduce harm associated with the use of substances. The Research Data Analyst will work closely with other research and programme team members to support the design and implementation of research. The Analyst will help manage, analyse, interpret, and report study findings. Analyses are anticipated to result in presentations and manuscripts. The Research Data Analyst should have knowledge and experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods, understanding of community-based research, and preferably be familiar with key public health concepts and issues and topics related to psychoactive substance use in Ukraine. 

Contract type: civil contract, part-time 50%.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct literature reviews, collect and process data from external sources to contextualise and triangulate APH studies;  
  • Develop and maintain protocols and materials for IRB review;
  • Manage, merge, clean, and maintain data, datasets, and databases;
  • Participate in qualitative data collection activities, including moderating of focus group discussions and conducting of qualitative interviews;
  • Perform or contribute to analysis of qualitative and quantitative data;
  • Participate in development and implementation processes of research projects;
  • Present and summarise analyses in various formats including raw output, tables, and graphics, dashboards, infographics, oral and written reports and presentations for diverse audiences and stakeholders, including manuscript development;
  • Participating in field staff and analysis meetings;
  • Use standard computer software packages for analysing data using a variety of standard statistical techniques (e.g., regression and longitudinal data analysis).

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • PhD/master’s in a relevant field (e.g., public health, psychology, statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology) 
  • Minimum of three years of experience involving management and analysis of quantitative heath data 
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and execute technical approaches to data management or analyses processes
  • Knowledge of research design techniques, tools and methods to collect and analyse quantitative and qualitative data
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis and good knowledge of at least one statistical software application (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata, SAS)
  • Qualitative data analysis skills in MAXQDA or similar are welcome
  • Excellent organisational, communication and writing skills
  • Ability to utilise English for professional tasks
  • Candidate must be detail oriented and able to work independently on assigned tasks
  • Experience with substance use or HIV/STI research and writing research manuscripts is preferred
  • Excellent writing skills and attention to accuracy and detail to prepare communication materials ranging from technical research reports to marketing materials that are analytical, technically and grammatically correct
