Web Developer

The project team runs and develops the world’s largest aggregator of research papers called CORE (core.ac.uk), with over 40 million monthly active users and storing over 200 million metadata records and 25 million scientific documents. CORE is currently listed among the 1,500 most used websites globally and among the 20 most used services in Science and Education.
CORE provides free access to millions of research papers as well as a number of information services for researchers, organisations and businesses. These include services enabling text & data mining, recommender systems, content management services for libraries as well as analytical services to support business intelligence for research.

Required skills:
– very good knowledge of and at least 2-year experience with web development;
– good knowledge of HTML and CSS;
– good knowledge of JavaScript including most recent ECMA specifications;
– deep knowledge of client-server communication, asynchronous requests, understanding of RESTful APIs;
– working knowledge of the Linux environment;
– experience with version control and issue tracking systems such as Git and Jira;
– good knowledge with working and querying databases;
– willingness to learn new things.

As a plus:
– experience in using React or other front-end framework;
– knowledge of web accessibility, WCAG 2.1;
– good skills in PHP, especially applied to web development and use of web framework such as Symfony;
– working knowledge of MySQL/MariaDB or other relational database;
– experience with developing RESTful APIs;
– knowledge of Python and/or Java, or willingness to learn those languages;
– continuous Integration understanding, ability to setup and maintain GitHub actions, Jenkins jobs or a similar system;
– basic knowledge of design, including inclusive web design.

Responsibilities:
– developing new front-end functionality of existing web applications and services;
– making changes to the API when it’s needed for the front end or developing of the new functionality completely within the API;
– maintaining and extending existing web applications;
– working closely with the front-end and back-end teams to develop and integrate functionalities.
