Background:

The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine is looking for highly qualified, motivated and experienced Ukrainian professional for the position of Language Assistant with its Head Office in Kyiv. The OSCE is committed to achieving a better balance of women and men within the Organization.

Initial duration of appointment is for 12 months, subject to a subsequent OSCE Permanent Council Decision to extend the mandate of the Mission.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Interpretation/Translation Cell, the incumbent provides professional translation/interpretation services as requested by the Office of the Head of Mission and Heads of Units/Sections at SMM Head Office. More specifically the incumbent is:

  1. Being responsible for the written translation of texts and documents of various kinds as assigned;
  2. Providing consecutive interpretation from Ukrainian and/or Russian into English and vice versa;
  3. Accompanying mission members, primarily senior managers, to provide interpretation during meetings, conferences, and seminars, and prepares reports on those events as required;
  4. Meeting and co-ordinating with other Language Assistants, staff and supervisory personnel in order to meet the objectives of the Interpretation/Translation Cell;
  5. Keeping minutes of the discussions and reports summaries from meetings and conferences;
  6. Following developments in relevant areas of work assignments, such as the political and humanitarian situation and developments in the activities of the Mission;
  7. Performing other tasks, including preparation of reports, forms and other documentation as required by the Chief Monitor’s Office.


Necessary Qualifications:

  • Ukrainian citizenship or holding permanent resident status in Ukraine;
  • Completed secondary education;
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in providing translation and/or language interpreting skills;
  • Computer literate with practical experience in Microsoft applications;
  • Professional fluency in English, Russian and Ukrainian languages, excellent written and oral communication skills in the mentioned languages;
  • Customer service oriented; ability to work in a confidential environment and maintain a high level of discretion;
  • Flexibility and ability to meet tight deadlines;
  • Capacity in planning and organizing daily activities adjusting priorities as required;
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work as a member of a team, with people of different cultural and religious backgrounds, different gender, diverse political views, while maintaining impartiality and objectivity
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity, as well as the ability to integrate a gender perspective into tasks and activities.

Remuneration Package:

Monthly remuneration, subject to social security deductions is 1029.00 Euro/month. Social benefits will include participation in the Cigna health insurance scheme. Appointments are normally made at step 1 of the applicable OSCE salary scale.
